The case of Akku Yadav, whose real name was Bharat Kalicharan Yadav, remains one of the most shocking crime stories from Nagpur.
Born in the early 1970s, Akku grew up in Kasturba Nagar and gradually built a gang that spread fear across the locality. Initially involved in petty crimes, he later escalated to serious offences including kidnapping, rape, and murder. Over the years, he was accused of multiple murders and around 40 rapes, with locals claiming the actual number could be much higher.
Despite being arrested several times, Akku often managed to escape strict punishment. Residents alleged that he had strong connections with local police, who failed to take action and, in some cases, even protected him. This led to growing anger and fear among the community.
The turning point came when Usha Narayane stood up against him and filed a complaint despite threats. This act encouraged residents to unite against Akku and his gang.
On 7 August 2004, police arrested Akku for his own safety after public anger intensified. However, on 13 August 2004, during a hearing at the Nagpur District Court, a large group of women attacked him inside the courtroom. Armed with knives and chilli powder, they stabbed him repeatedly, killing him within minutes.
Following the incident, several women, including Usha Narayane, were arrested. However, due to lack of evidence and witnesses, the case eventually collapsed, and in 2012, the accused were acquitted by the court.
The incident sparked national debate on justice and system failure. The story later gained wider attention through the Netflix series Indian Predator: Murder in a Courtroom.
