THE WRITTEN GUIDES💜 https://blackgrandmasvault.com LISTEN ON SPOTIFY🎧 https://open.spotify.com/show/033Gkku... She was seventy nine in the last photograph anybody took of her, and there was hardly a line on that face. No serums. No clinic. She had never heard the word retinol. This is the bathroom counter of Miss Lorena Beckwith, who came up in Marlin, Texas and raised her children in the Fifth Ward in Houston, just off Lyons Avenue. Ten things a Black woman of the nineteen fifties kept on that counter, and almost every one of them is still being sold this afternoon. Johnson's baby lotion on her face because mild was the point. The Ivory bar kept below the neck. Jergens on damp skin, always upward. Dickinson's witch hazel on cotton, twice a week at most. Vaseline over damp skin, never dry. A fingertip of Nivea, at night only. Oil of Olay that sank in and left nothing behind. Pond's cold cream on dry skin to take the day off. Noxzema twice a week when her skin ran hot. And the tenth one, the one holding up all the rest, is not on any shelf. Same jars. Same blue lid. Sitting on a low shelf at the drugstore for a few dollars while we walk past on our way to something that costs sixty. TELL ME Which jar was in YOUR grandmother's cabinet, and where in the world are you watching from. I read every single one. Not medical or skincare advice. Skin is personal, so patch test anything new on a small area first.
