2018 Gauss Prize David L Donoho

Stanford’s Professor Donoho sits down for ICM TV to discuss the work that led to his 2018 Gauss Prize, awarded for applications in mathematics. His work in compressed sensing has led to much faster MRI times, saving time in hospitals for patients around the world. Now he’s working on deep learning – though it’s taking over the world of AI, as a mathematical idea it’s poorly understood. At heart it’s a case of separating two classes in high dimensions – such as understanding how doctors distinguish sick patients from healthy patients. These kinds of high dimensional problems are fascinating ground for applied research.
