Kanayama in Ota City preserves stone walls from a mountain castle built in the 15th century. A shrine now stands on the mountaintop where the castle once stood. There are also several temples and shrines at the foot of the mountain. Among them, Daikoin Temple is particularly impressive, with its vast grounds and large main hall. This was the first time I tried the ULTRA WIDE-HELIAR 12mm II on a full-frame camera. Previously, I had tested the SUPER WIDE-HELIAR 15mm F4.5 II on an M9, but the vignetting was so severe that it was not practical to use, so I eventually sold it. I assumed that the ULTRA WIDE-HELIAR would probably be unusable on a full-frame sensor as well, but the results proved otherwise. Although a slight magenta color cast appears along the right edge of the frame, it is not particularly noticeable in practice. Of course, image quality and light falloff do deteriorate toward the four corners, so if that bothers you, the Type III version, which was designed with digital cameras in mind, would be a better choice. Personally, however, I found the rendering of this Type II version quite pleasing and by no means poor.
