Can a cabbage tell you if something is an acid or an alkali? 🟣🥬In this Chemistry practical I make red cabbage and turmeric indicators, test household liquids, and compare the results with universal indicator.
📋 Results
Vinegar: acid (cabbage pink, turmeric yellow, universal indicator pink/red)
Water and salt solution: neutral (cabbage purple, turmeric yellow, universal indicator green)
Dishwasher soap: alkali (cabbage green, turmeric orange-red, universal indicator blue)
Red cabbage and universal indicator showed acid, neutral and alkali. Turmeric only changed in the alkali.
📝 Exam tips
Acid: pH below 7. Neutral: pH 7. Alkali: pH above 7.
Describe results with the starting colour, the final colour and the conclusion.
Higher tier: neutralisation is H⁺ + OH⁻ → H₂O.
⚠️ Safety: wear goggles, take care with hot water, and don't taste anything. Dishwasher soap can irritate skin and eyes, and universal indicator contains ethanol, so keep it away from flames.
