Two-thirds of employers expanded their benefits offering last year, yet the UK ranks second lowest in the world for employee experience. Gethin Nadin argues the gap is not a generosity problem. It is a design and delivery failure.

Named one of the UK's Top 100 Most Influential People in 2026, recognised among the world's Most Influential HR Thinkers 2023 to 2026, and chair of the Westminster think tank, The Policy Liaison Group on Workplace Wellbeing. With host Darcy Mehta.
QUESTIONS ANSWERED IN THIS EPISODE
Why is the employee wellbeing investment gap widening?
Employers are spending. The spend is not reaching people. If an employee cannot find support, does not understand it, or cannot access it when they need it, that investment might as well not exist.
What actually drives wellbeing at work?
Job design, workload, autonomy, recognition, quality of leadership and role clarity. None of them are labelled wellbeing, and no meditation app compensates when they are wrong.
Why does wellbeing spending fail to reach employees?
Three reasons: organisations treat the consequences of poor work rather than its causes; support fragments across platforms and logins; and it is communicated too generically for anyone to see themselves in it.
Why is financial wellbeing still treated as a peripheral benefit?
Money is the last taboo at work. People discuss almost any other part of their health before admitting they are struggling, and financial stress consumes the bandwidth that decisions, creativity and relationships need.
How does manager financial stress damage culture?
Managers are the single most important factor in an employee's experience of work. A manager worried about money is less present in one-to-ones, less effective at coaching and less able to spot someone else struggling. The system starts eating itself.
What separates organisations that embed wellbeing from those that bolt it on?
They stop asking which wellbeing products to buy and start asking how to create a working environment where people perform and thrive. It sits with the board, not on the side of the business.
What is the one non-negotiable action for a CHRO in the next 90 days?
Stop talking about wellbeing and start talking about performance. Identify the one to three business priorities that matter most to the CEO and CFO, then connect what HR is doing explicitly to those.
How does real-time employee listening help?
It supplies leading indicators instead of lagging ones: strain before it becomes sickness, disengagement before it becomes turnover, conflict before it becomes a formal case.
