It is half past five in the morning on the Lower East Side of New York, and you are pushing a rented cart out of a stable on Sheriff Street. By seven it will be a store on Hester Street, with no roof, no walls and no rent, and the fish on it has no ice under it. For half a century, this is how a large part of the city bought its dinner. The story of the pushcart peddlers of New York: the cart rented by the day, the license and the padrone, the price argued with every customer, the tribute to the shopkeeper and the policeman's tap on the shoulder. Why whole neighborhoods bought from the street: the most crowded district on the planet, tenement kitchens with no refrigerator, and what Jacob Riis called a dry-goods store that pays no rent. The Mayor's Push-Cart Commission of 1906, Maxwell Street in Chicago, and the end, which had two causes: Mayor Fiorello La Guardia's enclosed markets, from La Marqueta in 1936 to the Essex Street Market in 1940, and the self-service store, from Clarence Saunders's Piggly Wiggly in 1916 to Michael Cullen's King Kullen in 1930. Archival sources for this episode include the Library of Congress (photographs by Jacob Riis, the Detroit Publishing Company, the Bain News Service, Lewis Hine, Russell Lee and Gordon Parks), the U.S. National Archives, the New York Public Library's Schomburg Center, Wikimedia Commons and the Digital Public Library of America. Where the archive holds no photograph of what the narration describes, any AI reconstruction is counted and identified in the credits below, and no real person's face is generated.
