I wrote most of this song a couple weeks ago in my head while driving back from dinner out. Song lyrics are not always courteous with regards to their arrival times.
Our seventeen year old son Will Ensley was killed July 26, 2023 by a reckless dump truck driver. Will was stopped, waiting at a red light when his pickup was hit in the rear. The dump truck driver drove into a line of stopped cars, and failed to apply his brakes at any time during the crash sequence. Will's vehicle was the first he hit, so it bore the brunt of the damage. Will fought hard, but ultimately his injuries were not survivable. Will was a bright light in this world. He was a smart, funny, loving and caring person. And, he was a strong, competitive swimmer who truly loved the sport of swim. He had a bright future ahead of him.
Please take the time to check the organ donation box next time you renew your license as many of us will not know when our time is up, and we may be able to offer others the incredible gift of life.
If you're looking for a worthy charity to consider donating to please consider the Will M. Ensley Memorial Scholarship Foundation, a 501C3 public charity, that was established in 2023 to honor Will, his love for the sport of swim, and to support others who share his love for the sport of swim. The foundation was established to provide annual college scholarships to deserving graduating seniors from the Shawnee Mission Northwest High School swim programs, and the Empire Kansas City Swim Club. Our hope is that through the foundation’s charitable gifts Will’s light will continue to shine in this world. If you’d like to learn more about Will and his foundation please visit

A big part of me died with Will that day. I am gutted by his loss. Writing, performing, and recording the songs that I’ve written for and about Will serve as a form of therapy for me. I wrote and recorded them knowing that if no one but me was ever moved by them then they would have still served their purpose for me. I’ve put them out into the world now with hope that they can help someone else the way the music of so many others has helped me.
