New BSF Demonstration Facility Opens in Jinja, Uganda | Farmer Training & Production

A new Black Soldier Fly (BSF) demonstration facility has been established in Namagera, Budondo, Jinja District, to promote sustainable agriculture, farmer training, and the production of insect protein and organic fertilizer. The facility provides a practical learning center where farmers can discover how to use BSF technology to transform organic waste into valuable agricultural resources. Through hands-on training, farmers can learn the entire BSF production cycle, from selecting suitable organic waste and preparing feeding substrates to harvesting fresh larvae, drying BSF, managing pupae, rearing adult flies, and producing eggs. The facility aims to benefit farmers across several agricultural sectors: Fish farmers: Learn how BSF larvae can be incorporated into properly formulated fish feeds as a valuable protein source to support fish growth. Poultry and broiler farmers: Explore BSF-based feed ingredients that can help diversify protein sources and potentially reduce reliance on conventional feed ingredients. Crop farmers: Discover how BSF frass fertilizer can help improve soil fertility, add organic matter, and support crop production. Organic waste management: Learn how suitable organic waste can be converted into useful products instead of being discarded, supporting a more circular agricultural system. Youth and women: Explore opportunities for skills development, employment, and entrepreneurship through BSF production and related agricultural businesses. The facility is managed on the ground by **Blossom Integrated Development Organisation, with support from partners contributing to training, technical expertise, farmer mobilisation, and the establishment of the demonstration site. Darwesh Mpungwe Foods Ltd. provides BSF consultancy support. This initiative demonstrates how collaboration, practical training, and insect-based technology can help farmers access alternative feed ingredients, improve soil management, create business opportunities, and contribute to local food security.
