High above a damp rainforest ravine, a fallen tree trunk bridges the steep slope. To escape flooding and rot, the builder transforms this suspended log into an elevated A-frame shelter without a single metal nail.
Using only hand tools, he chisels deep mortise sockets and bores channels with a hand auger to peg a level bridge deck. He raises a steep timber skeleton braced into the trunk, then harvests canopy vines to weave tight wattle walls. After splitting bamboo to weave a hauling basket, he digs blocks of forest sod and hoists them by rope to tile a living grass roof.
Inside, he mortars a stone and clay hearth vented through the turf roof with a bamboo chimney flue. As smoke curls into the canopy and a kettle boils over embers, he pins the balcony railing on his dry treetop porch.
