In 1971, International Harvester released a mid-range tractor that was never the most powerful in its lineup. Fifty-five thousand American farmers bought it anyway. Its engine, a turbocharged diesel built so heavy it routinely ran 10,000 hours without overhaul, arrived at the exact moment a secret Soviet grain deal blew the doors off American agriculture. Then the company that built it went bankrupt and disappeared. The tractor kept running. This is the story of the IH 1066, the machine that outlasted the empire that made it, and the century-long quest for one simple idea that changed how America feeds the world.
