Three hours of wind and nothing else: no rain, no sea, no stream, no fire on the soundtrack and no music. For a night when you want weather to sleep to, but not water.
Wind is the weather that drops away. A gust ends and for a moment there is nothing. So three recordings run at once here, one in the middle and one to each side, each started at a different point in its own take, and the level was checked second by second across all three hours. It does not go quiet on you: no dip lasts longer than a second, and in three hours only eight of them go more than 6 dB under the usual level, none as far as 10 dB.
The takes are about six and a half minutes, five minutes and a minute and a quarter long, and each one repeats until the three hours are up. The short one comes round more than a hundred and forty times.
The painting is the inside of a stone hut on a hillside, late at night. An oil lantern on a stool is the only light in the room, and its glow is the one thing in the picture that moves. A checked blanket hangs on the far wall, a full basket sits on the floor, and a tin cup stands on the near end of a table with a coil of rope beside it. Through a small window with its shutters open, the moon is up over the hill.
The three people who recorded the wind are named at the foot of this description. No talking.
Ambience for sleep, study and rest — not medical or mental health advice. If you're struggling, please talk to a doctor or a qualified professional.
