Raag Des (or Desh) is a popular and melodious raga in Hindustani classical music. It belongs to the Khamaj Thaat and evokes a mood of romantic longing and devotion. It is widely used in classical compositions, semi-classical forms like thumri, and devotional as well as patriotic music. Thaat: Khamaj Jaati (Type): Audav–Sampurna (5 notes in ascent, 7 in descent) Vadi (Most prominent note): Rishabh (Re) Samvadi (Second most prominent note): Pancham (Pa) Time of Performance: Late night (around 12 am to 3 am) Aroha (Ascending): Ni (komal) is omitted Sa Re Ma Pa Ni Sa' (Notes: Ga and Dha are omitted in ascent) Avaroha (Descending): Sa' Ni Dha Pa Ma Ga Re Ga Sa (In the descent, Ni is shuddha, and all 7 notes are used) Important Notes: Shuddha Ni is used in Avaroha. Komal Ni may occasionally appear as a touch in some semi-classical or light compositions (like in folk or patriotic songs). Re and Pa are powerful, and phrases like Re Ma Pa or Pa Ni Sa' are common.
