I Built a Japanese Macaque Mountain Retreat in Planet Zoo | Caledonia Zoo

Today, Adventurer, we're bringing the mountains of Japan to Caledonia Zoo to create a natural Japanese Macaque habitat in Planet Zoo. For Caledonia Zoo, this mountain home is designed around natural climbing, exploration, foraging and one very special feature — a steaming hot spring inspired by the famous bathing behaviour of Japanese Macaques. Welcome back to the Bard of Many Inspirations. In this chapter of our Caledonia Zoo journey, we're creating a habitat where the landscape itself becomes part of the enrichment. From the central rock formation and natural climbing routes to the hidden backstage area, custom fences and steaming hot spring, every detail has been designed to give the macaques opportunities to move, explore and behave naturally. But this habitat isn't only about the animals. I wanted the guest experience to feel just as alive — with changing viewpoints, hidden details and glimpses of the macaques moving through their mountain home.
