POV: You are a twenty-year-old farmer in 58 BC. Your family is in debt, a river has taken a third of your harvest, and Caesar is calling for men. This is the story of one Roman legionnaire, from a quiet field in Cisalpine Gaul to the siege of Alesia. You will swear the oath in Cremona, learn to carry a whole life on your back, and follow the legions through the Alps, the Rhine, the forests of Gaul, Bibracte, Gergovia and finally Alesia, where Rome built two walls around an entire army. The protagonist and his friends (Gnaeus, Quintus, Marcellus, Livia) are fictional. The setting, the equipment and the campaigns are real, based on Caesar's own Commentaries on the Gallic War and modern historical research. Figures such as army sizes and wall lengths come from ancient sources and are debated by historians. ⏱ CHAPTERS 0:00 A Quiet Morning on the Farm 0:41 The Plain of Cisalpine Gaul 1:21 Your Family 2:10 Market Day and the Harvest Festival 2:58 Dreams of a Young Farmer 3:37 The Flood and the Debt 4:11 News of the Helvetii and Caesar 4:54 Leaving Home 5:38 The Recruiting Officer in Cremona 6:23 Receiving Your Equipment 7:18 Training Camp and Centurion Marcellus 7:42 Meeting Gnaeus and Quintus 8:26 Learning to Survive 9:13 Marching, Digging, Drilling 10:04 Crossing the Alps 10:42 Following the Helvetii 11:24 The Battle of Bibracte 13:17 The Night After 13:50 Years on the March: The Rhine Bridge 14:37 A Letter from Home 15:19 Becoming an Optio 15:55 The Siege of Gergovia (52 BC) 16:37 Vercingetorix and Alesia 17:25 Quintus's Promise 17:50 The Starving Town 18:15 The Relief Army Arrives 18:35 The Night Attack on the Wall 19:10 The Final Day 20:22 Vercingetorix Surrenders 20:43 The Road Home 21:25 The Pouch of Earth 21:40 The Sound of Marching If you enjoy immersive second-person history, subscribe to Rust Story for more "POV: You Are a Soldier" stories. 📚 Sources: Julius Caesar, Commentarii de Bello Gallico (Books 1, 7); Adrian Goldsworthy, Caesar: Life of a Colossus; Peter Connolly, Greece and Rome at War. #RomanLegionnaire #JuliusCaesar #HistoryPOV
