A morning prayer for the storm you can already see coming. The test result that has not arrived. The layoff you can read in the numbers. The conversation you have already rehearsed five times in your head. There is a particular kind of fear that shows up in the morning, before anything has actually gone wrong. You are sitting somewhere ordinary and right now you are safe. But you have been holding your breath for weeks, and you are tired. "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. John 14:27 (KJV) Five words carry this whole prayer: NOT AS THE WORLD GIVETH. The world's peace is rented. It depends on the circumstances holding still, and they never do. Jesus offered a different category on the worst night of His life, in the upper room, hours before He was arrested. We look at Paul and Silas in Acts 16, beaten into the inner prison with their feet in the stocks, singing at midnight so that the other prisoners heard them. And at Daniel 3, where three young men say the bravest words in the Old Testament: BUT IF NOT. This prayer does not ask God to stop the storm.
