Small in size but vast in atmosphere, Iona blends white sandy beaches, open machair, rocky shores, and deep spiritual history into a landscape that feels calm, remote, and quietly powerful. This is a walk shaped by sea air, silence, and centuries of pilgrimage. 🕰️ Highlights, History & Local Lore Iona sits just off the west coast of Mull, but its influence reaches far beyond its shoreline. In 563 AD, St Columba arrived here from Ireland and founded a monastery that became one of the most important religious centres in early medieval Britain and Ireland. From this small island, Christianity spread across much of Scotland, giving Iona a reputation as a deeply sacred place. As the walk moves northward, the island opens into a gentle patchwork of crofts, stone walls, grassy paths, and sea views. The low-lying landscape allows the sky to dominate, with shifting light rolling across the water and neighbouring islands appearing on the horizon. Iona’s beauty is not loud or dramatic — it works quietly, through colour, space, and stillness.
