Mussorgsky composed St. John’s Eve on Bald Mountain, a “musical picture” of a Witches’ Sabbath occurring at Bald Mountain on St. John’s Eve, which, interestingly, he completed on that very night - June 23, 1867. Mussorgsky was proud of this early “mature” effort, but his mentor, Mily Balakirev, refused to perform it. Mussorgsky attempted to insert the music, with expanded forces - vocal soloists, chorus, and orchestra - into two subsequent projects: the collaborative opera-ballet Mlada (1872), and the opera Sorochinsky Fair (1880). It can be argued that the work we know as Night on Bald Mountain, credited to Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky (1839–1881), is more the work of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. Listen to this newly remastered version from the famous Soviet conductor Evgeny Svetlanov and the USSR TV & Radio Large Symphony Orchestra.
