Take control of an attack saucer and dive into a fast-paced aerial assault in Space Jockey, a scrolling shooter originally released for the Atari 2600 in January 1982. Designed by Garry Kitchen for James Wickstead Design Associates and published under the Vidtec brand of U.S. Games, this early Atari title puts you behind the controls of a flying saucer moving across a constantly scrolling battlefield.
The objective is straightforward: fly toward the right side of the screen, avoid the undulating terrain below, and destroy as many enemy targets as possible. Your saucer can move vertically but stops just before touching the ground, making careful positioning an important part of surviving the changing landscape.
The battlefield is filled with different types of targets. Ground-based tanks attempt to stop your advance, while the skies are populated by jet planes, propeller planes, helicopters, and hot air balloons. You'll also encounter trees and houses on the ground, which can be destroyed as you make your way across the scrolling environment.
Space Jockey includes 16 game variations, giving players different ways to experience its scrolling shooter action. Despite its simple premise, the game is built around quick reactions, accurate shooting, and controlling the saucer's altitude while constantly watching the terrain ahead.
An interesting part of Space Jockey's history is that it was Garry Kitchen's first game for the Atari 2600. He developed it during a six-month effort to reverse engineer the Atari VCS while working at James Wickstead Design Associates. Kitchen later described Space Jockey as a modestly fun game that also served as a kind of test bed while he was learning the hardware.
The game originally shipped on a 2K cartridge, which was notable at a time when many Atari VCS games used 4K cartridges. It was also the first release from U.S. Games and eventually received a European release through Carrere Video.
In this video, we're taking a nostalgic look at Space Jockey on the Atari 2600, exploring its scrolling battlefield, flying saucer controls, enemy formations, ground targets, and classic early-1980s arcade-style action.
