Living with family under one roof can save money, make caregiving easier, and bring generations closer together. But making multigenerational living work takes more than figuring out where everyone will sleep. Before anyone moves in, there are some conversations worth having—especially the slightly awkward ones. In this video, we look at what families may want to discuss before combining households, including money and shared expenses, privacy and personal space, childcare and caregiving expectations, chores and household responsibilities, guests and everyday routines, whether the home itself works for everyone, and what happens if someone's needs or plans change. There’s no single right way to structure a multigenerational household. The goal is to make sure everyone understands what living together will actually look like before assumptions turn into resentment. Clear expectations don't make a family arrangement less loving. Sometimes they're exactly what helps protect the relationship.
