Northwest New Mexico is facing historic flooding after the San Juan and Animas rivers surged beyond their banks, inundating homes, closing bridges and triggering hundreds of rescues. Since Thursday, October 22, 2026, officials estimate that 200–300 people have been rescued and as many as 2,000 homes have been affected. In Shiprock, the San Juan River reached approximately 23 feet, more than seven feet above flood stage, while entire neighborhoods remained closed to evacuees.
In this video, we cover the overnight rescue operations involving National Guard helicopters and swiftwater teams, sewage contamination in Shiprock and Bloomfield, and the record-breaking river levels recorded in Farmington. We also examine how more than five inches of rain in parts of southern Colorado fell on saturated ground, sending runoff rapidly into rivers flowing south into New Mexico.
The emergency has exposed additional dangers, including power outages, possible gas leaks and downed electrical lines. The Navajo Nation and Hopi Tribe declared emergencies, while shelters opened for displaced families. Officials warned residents not to return to evacuated neighborhoods until authorities confirm it is safe.
The crisis spread beyond the Four Corners when a tornado struck Santa Fe’s Rancho Siringo neighborhood, damaging homes and knocking out power to several hundred customers. Additional heavy rain threatened central and eastern New Mexico, while the Rio Puerco was forecast to crest Tuesday.
Global Weather covers natural disasters and extreme weather events as they develop, using sourced reporting and avoiding unsupported speculation.
