There are moments in conflict when a village witnesses one reality, while the outside world receives another.
“They Were Hiding Behind the Hut” is a literary adaptation from Bastar Diary. It explores the distance between lived experience and the official account that follows.
A village surrounded by armed forces.
Families hiding inside their homes.
One villager shot before the eyes of his family.
The next day, newspapers reported the death of a dreaded Naxal in an encounter.
Soon afterwards came a civic action programme, food packets, cash assistance—and silence.
This poem is not about a single encounter.
It is about memory, fear, official narratives, and the quiet struggle between truth and history.
