A solo cycling commute through the south of Christchurch to the city fringes — downhill freewheeling, near misses, hidden food gems, op shops, eels and the never ending search for a taste of home. Join me on my ride from Cashmere Presbyterian Church down to KOSCO METRO — freewheeling downhill is pure gravity and joy, until an impatient truck overtakes me hazardously or potentially car doors swinging open without warning and vehicles pulling out from parked positions without looking or indicating — a fear every Christchurch cyclist knows well. Speaking of hazards — is Dyers Pass Road actually the most dangerous road in Christchurch? According to Christchurch City Council, the roundabout has a high crash rate, with 27 crashes reported between 2010 and 2021, ten of which resulted in serious injury — so the reputation is earned. Along the way — the new roundabout configuration, my Giant carbon road bike that makes most rides feel effortless, and my cycling kit with a story: gloves from Decathlon Sevilla Centro, a Tyka jacket from the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup courtesy of a dear Pakistani friend, and a Nike top from Shanghai circa 2012 that has outlasted almost everything. My Golden Triangle stops: Commi, Zaffron, Formaggio's, Moon Under Water — Colombo Street at its best. The SPCA op shop that often gives treats to my dog, City Mission, Further Faster tucked away if you know where to look. Makan Junction for heartwarming, cooked-with-love Malaysian comfort. Mori Mori. The Tikkas and Masalas food truck. The Southern Asian restaurant that always asks about my dog — that kind of warmth matters. And the eel mural painted on the school wall — a quiet reminder that tuna, in te reo, sacred to Māori, still belong here. I hope we look after them well. Ending where it counts — KOSCO METRO, stocking just enough Asian groceries to keep hope alive.
