In this second part of my discussion on dome ports, we dive into one of the trickier optical problems in underwater photography — field curvature.
While a dome port can fix the color dispersion of a flat port, it introduces a new challenge of its own. In this episode, we’ll look at what causes that curvature, how it affects sharpness, and what you can actually do about it.
You’ll learn why your corners may look soft, why bigger domes help (but not as much as you might think), and why fisheye lenses handle the underwater world better than rectilinear wide-angle lenses ever could.
We’ll end with a the simple formula that lets you calculate where the virtual image really is.
🧠 In this episode:
– What field curvature is and why it matters underwater
– How dome ports create virtual images
– The three ways to fight corner blurriness
– The truth about big domes
– Why fisheye lenses have a natural advantage
– The formula for calculating virtual image distance behind a dome port
