Allan Savory made one of the biggest mistakes in the history of conservation — he recommended killing 40,000 elephants to stop land degradation. The land got worse. This talk is about what he learned from that error, and how it led to a discovery that could reverse desertification on a global scale.
Allan Savory is a Zimbabwean wildlife biologist, farmer, and game ranger who developed Holistic Planned Grazing — a farming practice that uses livestock to regenerate degraded land and reverse desertification. His 2013 TED Talk has been viewed over 9 million times. He is the co-founder of the Savory Institute.
He has spent 70 years working on one problem: why do humans keep destroying the land that sustains them? The answer he found is both simple and uncomfortable. It isn't livestock. It isn't fossil fuels. It's the way every human institution — from families to governments — develops policy. And the solution involves putting the animals back.
