A Vancouver-based mining company has proposed exploratory uranium drilling in the Carson National Forest near Canjilón, in the headwaters of the Rio Chama. That river supplies water to acequia farmers, land grant communities, Tribal nations, ranchers, and thousands of families across northern New Mexico. The company, Gamma Resources Ltd., has no production history and a $22 million accumulated deficit. Exploration drilling is the first step toward uranium extraction, and once uranium contamination reaches an aquifer, it may be impossible to fully clean up.
