Together with Dr Tony Watts, he wrote a musical play about the relationship between the Prince of Wales (later Edward VIII) and Wallis Simpson. A key inspiration was the Prince’s 1936 visit to the South Wales coalfields, where he witnessed hardship and declared that “something must be done.” Barry Male Voice Choir premiered Welby’s song at the 1992 Ebbw Vale Garden Festival, fittingly linking the music to the town’s coal‑exporting heritage. A reflective arrangement titled Black Gold by Nigel Hopkins explores themes of struggle, pride, and hope. The rights to this album do not belong to me ... uploaded for enjoyment and to showcase the best of Welsh music and male choral singing to the world!
