Romani dance: Dancer Ozgen is teaching a local dance in London

This week in Dance Journals we are going to Turkey! Actually we are still in London; however we are going to be talking about the Romani people’s dance from Turkey. Romani people from Turkey have a specific dance that is very powerful and energetic with a rhythm of 9/8. In this video, we are talking with a Turkish dance instructor Özgen and he is telling us the basics of Romani dance. Romani dance is so intrinsic to the culture of Turkey that it is a very common and beloved dance of weddings and social gatherings in Turkey. Özgen is telling us the interest for the Romani dance and other Middle Eastern dances like belly dance is increasing in the Western world. He is also saying that there is “something earthy about 9/8 rhythm”, so his students love Romani dance. Özgen is also teaching belly dance and he is performing Romani and belly dance in London and all around the world.
