Electrotherapy and Manual Therapy 1. Electrotherapy Electrotherapy is the therapeutic use of electrical energy/electromagnetic energy to produce physiological and therapeutic effects in the body. Common modalities: TENS – pain relief IFT (Interferential Therapy) – pain relief, muscle stimulation Ultrasound therapy – deep heating, soft-tissue healing SWD (Short Wave Diathermy) – deep heating IRR (Infrared Radiation) – superficial heating Electrical muscle stimulation (EMS/NMES) – muscle activation LASER therapy – pain relief and tissue healing Main effects: Reduces pain Relaxes muscle spasm Improves circulation Reduces stiffness Promotes tissue healing Helps improve muscle strength/function 2. Manual Therapy Manual therapy is a hands-on technique in which the therapist uses their hands to assess and treat muscles, joints and soft tissues. Common techniques: Joint mobilization Joint manipulation Soft-tissue massage Stretching Myofascial release Muscle energy techniques Manual traction Main effects: Reduces pain Improves joint range of motion Decreases muscle tightness Improves flexibility Reduces stiffness Improves functional movement Difference ElectrotherapyManual TherapyUses electrical/physical energyUses therapist's handsTENS, IFT, ultrasound etc.Mobilization, massage, manipulationMainly used for pain, muscle stimulation and tissue effectsMainly used for mobility, flexibility and soft-tissue problemsRequires an electrotherapy deviceUsually requires no electrical device #Electrotherapy #ManualTherapy #Physiotherapy #PhysicalTherapy #TENS #IFT #UltrasoundTherapy #PainRelief #Rehabilitation #PhysioStudent #PhysiotherapyStudents #PhysioNotes #ElectrotherapyModalities #ManualTherapyTechniques #MusculoskeletalPhysiotherapy #PhysiotherapyEducation #BAMS #MedicalStudents #StudyPhysiotherapy #HealthcareEducation
