In Part 2 of his series on the theological virtues, Fr. Chad Ripperger explains the supernatural virtue of hope—our confident expectation of eternal beatitude and the divine assistance necessary to reach God. True hope is not an emotion, worldly optimism, material prosperity, or the expectation of spiritual consolations. It is an infused virtue residing in the will that moves us to desire God, depend upon His power, cooperate with grace, and await the Beatific Vision. Because reaching God exceeds every natural human ability, salvation is impossible without divine assistance. Fr. Ripperger examines the two principal sins opposed to hope: despair and presumption. Despair doubts God’s power or willingness to forgive and save, while presumption expects salvation without conversion, grace, repentance, or cooperation. He also discusses spiritual sloth, attachment to created goods, habitual sin, discouragement over problems in the Church, and the danger of mistaking sacramentals for guarantees of salvation. The lecture concludes with practical means of increasing hope: making acts of hope, remaining mindful of God through prayer, offering sufferings and good works, studying Church history, avoiding excessive negativity, etc. This is Part 2 of Fr. Ripperger’s three-part series on faith, hope, and charity. 0:00 Introduction to the Theological Virtue of Hope 0:09 Hope as an Infused Virtue 0:41 Eternal Beatitude and Divine Assistance 1:21 Bridging the Infinite Distance Between Man and God 2:02 Awaiting the Beatific Vision 2:18 Hope Is Not an Emotion 2:50 Prosperity, Charismatic Gifts and False Expectations 4:07 Spiritual Consolations and God’s Providence 5:18 Hope Resides in the Will 6:10 How Faith Strengthens Hope 7:39 Why the Saints in Heaven No Longer Need Hope 8:21 Why the Damned Have No Hope 9:16 Human Assistance and Divine Assistance 10:18 Our Lady and the Saints as God’s Instruments 10:41 Can We Hope Too Much in God? 11:03 Despair and Presumption 11:51 No Sin Is Beyond God’s Forgiveness 12:57 Despair and Spiritual Sloth 13:51 Lust, Attachment and the Loss of Hope 14:22 Why Spiritual Goods Can Seem Painful 16:02 Detachment From Created Goods 16:32 The Vice of Presumption 17:04 First Grace and the Council of Trent 17:45 Why Mortal Sin Cannot Merit Grace 18:41 Perfect Contrition and God’s Generosity 19:44 Presuming Upon a Future Confession 20:25 Pride as the Cause of Presumption 21:21 Vainglory and the Modern Age 21:59 Hope, Detachment and Happiness 22:58 Hope Gives Purpose to Earthly Life 23:36 Depending Upon God While Cooperating With Grace 24:08 Other Sins Against Hope 24:23 Remaining Hopeful During Crisis in the Church 25:37 The Failure to Desire Heaven 26:00 Sacramentals and Superstitious Presumption 26:58 The Spiritual Danger of Constant Negativity 27:54 Practical Ways to Increase Hope 28:11 Acts of Hope and Short Aspirations 28:42 Remaining in God’s Presence Through Prayer 29:14 Offering Prayers, Sufferings and Good Works 30:01 Church History as a Source of Hope 30:33 Infallibility and God’s Protection of the Church 31:28 Avoiding Excessive Negativity 32:09 Stop Habitual Sin 33:04 Confession, the Eucharist and God’s Mercy 33:43 Devotion to the Holy Ghost 34:25 The Gifts of Counsel and Fortitude 35:20 Marian Consecration and the Rosary 36:16 The Sacred Heart and Divine Mercy 36:33 False Ideas About God’s Mercy 37:51 The Unity of God’s Justice and Mercy 39:20 Mercy Restores the Order of Justice 40:19 God’s Mercy Is Ordered Toward Perfection 42:14 Mercy Is Given to the Contrite 43:24 The General Judgment 44:56 No Sin Is Greater Than God’s Mercy 45:45 Reparation and the Sacred Heart 46:53 God’s Purifying Love 48:24 Christ, the Font of All Consolation 48:49 Trusting in Christ for Salvation 49:06 Praying for Final Perseverance 49:40 Charity as a Sign of Hope 50:04 Final Blessing For more sermons & lectures please visit http://sensustraditionis.org/ & remember to do the PenanceWare Fr asks for Fr Ripperger's order of exorcists http://dolorans.org/ (C) 2013 Sensus Fidelium 🔴🔴🔴🔴🔴🔴🔴🔴🔴🔴🔴🔴🔴🔴🔴🔴🔴🔴🔴 ✝️ SUPPORT THE MISSION 🙏 Donate https://sensusfidelium.com/donate-sup... 📬 Free Catholic Newsletter https://sensusfidelium.com/newsletter/ 📰 Read on Substack https://sensusfidelium.substack.com/ ──────────────────── 📺 WATCH & READ 📺 Sensus Fidelium App https://sensusfidelium.tv/ 📚 Sensus Fidelium Press https://sensusfideliumpress.com/ 👕 Official Merchandise https://sensusfidelium.com/merchandise/ ──────────────────── 🤝 PARTNER WITH US 📣 Advertise on Sensus Fidelium https://sensusfidelium.com/advertise-... 🎤 Invite Steve Cunningham to Speak https://sensusfidelium.com/speaking/ ⛪ Parish Formation & Consultation https://sensusfidelium.com/for-parishes/ ──────────────────── 🌎 CATHOLIC COMMUNITY ✝️ Trusted Catholic Businesses https://sensusfidelium.com/catholic-b... 🔴🔴🔴🔴🔴🔴🔴🔴🔴🔴🔴🔴🔴🔴🔴🔴🔴🔴🔴 #FrRipperger #TheologicalVirtues #VirtueOfHope #CatholicHope #TrustInGod
