Early retirement sounds like the ultimate dream.
No boss. No Monday morning meetings. No traffic. Enough money in the bank. Maybe a beautiful house in the mountains, a cup of chai in your hand, and finally… life on your own terms.
But the dream of early retirement and the reality of actually living it can be very different.
In this video, I explore the ugly truth and dark reality of early retirement- the side that corpus calculators, FIRE discussions, and retirement planning spreadsheets rarely talk about.
What happens to your identity when the designation disappears?
What happens when office stress disappears… but so do colleagues, conversations, structure and the small routines that unknowingly gave your day meaning?
Why do even financially successful people remain obsessed with whether their retirement corpus is “enough”?
And is that dream of retiring to a peaceful house or café in the mountains really as perfect as it looks from the outside?
But there is an even bigger reason we need to have this conversation.
For our generation, early retirement may not always be a choice.
AI, automation, corporate restructuring and the realities of building a career after 45–50 mean many of us may have to reinvent our lives earlier than we expect.
So perhaps the real question is no longer:
“Should I retire early?
It is:
“When that day comes — by choice or by circumstance — will I actually be ready for it?”
And being ready means much more than building ₹5 crore, ₹10 crore or some magical retirement corpus.
It means building an identity outside your job.
Finding something you genuinely want to move towards, rather than simply trying to escape work.
Creating a financial structure that lets you sleep peacefully.
And designing a life that continues to give you purpose, income, relationships and something worth waking up for.
For me, that next identity could be building NRI Life full-time or teaching. Yours could be completely different.
Early retirement should not be the end of work. It should be the beginning of work you actually want to do.
If you are in your 40s or 50s, thinking about FIRE, financial independence, retirement in India, moving back to India, building a retirement corpus, or simply wondering what life after corporate could look like - this video is for you.
