For over 1,200 years, the small Italian town of Lanciano has preserved one of the most extraordinary Eucharistic Miracles in Christian history.
In the 8th century, a priest struggling with doubt about the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist was celebrating Mass when something unexpected happened. At the moment of consecration, the host visibly changed into flesh, and the wine became blood—forming five distinct clots that remain preserved to this day.
This event, known as the Eucharistic Miracle of Lanciano, has drawn countless people over the centuries. While many come as pilgrims and faithful Christians, skeptics have also come.
Yet, scientific investigations in the 1970s have confirmed that the 8th-century Eucharistic miracle of Lanciano is real. It consists of real human flesh (striated cardiac muscle of the left ventricle) and real human blood (Type AB). The samples show no preservatives, yet remain preserved, with the blood exhibiting properties of fresh, living blood.
While miracles like Lanciano are rare and striking, the Church teaches that at every Mass, something even greater occurs: the bread and wine truly become the Body and Blood of Christ—though hidden under the appearance of bread and wine.
In Lanciano, God has removed the veil.
Perhaps, like the doubting apostle Thomas, we are invited not only to see—but to believe: “Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe.” (John 20:29)
