What actually killed you in the Stone Age? While pop culture makes you think cavemen spent every day dodging sabertooth cats and venomous snakes, real anthropological data reveals a very different—and much stranger—reality. In this animated countdown, we rank the 15 deadliest ways prehistoric humans met their end, from the least likely hazards to the unexpected #1 killer that claimed more lives than all apex predators combined. This ranking is based on real-world demographic records of over 3,300 deaths across modern hunter-gatherer societies (primarily the Gurven & Kaplan 2007 study)—providing the closest scientific window we have into ancient human survival and mortality. (Note on ranking: Causes 15 through 8 represent accident categories grouped in field records, ordered here by qualitative assessment as detailed in the video). Which of the fifteen would have gotten you first?
