I Bought a Vintage Swedish M40 Mess Kit and M36 Gas Mask Bag … Here’s How It Works!

In this video, I take a detailed look at a vintage Swedish M40 stainless steel mess kit, originally used by the Swedish Army, and explore the kit itself and how it was designed to be used in the field. I recently added this interesting piece of Swedish military equipment to my collection, and in the video I go through the mess kit in detail, looking at its construction, components and original purpose. I also explain how the 1960s-era alcohol stove and windshield were later incorporated into the system, giving the mess kit a practical cooking capability. While researching how these kits were carried and used, I discovered another interesting piece of Swedish military equipment that collectors often pair with the mess kit — a vintage 1940s Swedish military gas mask bag. I show the bag in detail, including plenty of close-up footage of its construction, ajustments and overall condition. I then demonstrate how the different parts of the mess kit fit together and explain how the complete setup can be assembled and used for cooking in the field. It's fascinating to see how a relatively simple collection of stainless steel components, a small alcohol burner and windshield can come together to form a compact outdoor cooking system. And, of course, no mess kit video would be complete without actually cooking something in it! For the cooking section, I make one of my favorite meals — curried fish chowder. I take my usual recipe and adjust the quantities so that it can be prepared using the Swedish mess kit, demonstrating how the available cooking capacity can be put to practical use. So, whether you're interested in Swedish military history, vintage military equipment, mess tins, outdoor cooking, military surplus, camping equipment, or simply enjoy seeing old field gear put back to use, I hope you'll enjoy this look at the Swedish M40 mess kit and its associated equipment.
