Learn about canine distemper virus (CDV), its epidemiology, diagnosis, prevention, and the ongoing challenges it presents for both domestic dogs and wildlife populations worldwide. In this webinar, Prof. Nicola Decaro explores the biology and epidemiology of canine distemper virus (Morbillivirus canis), including the different circulating viral lineages and the ability of CDV to infect a wide range of domestic and wild animal species. He discusses the important role of the domestic–wildlife interface in maintaining transmission and contributing to outbreaks. The webinar reviews the clinical presentation of canine distemper, from respiratory and gastrointestinal signs to progressive neurological disease, and examines current approaches to diagnosis. Prof. Decaro discusses molecular methods such as RT-qPCR, as well as antigen testing, serology, virus neutralization, and genomic sequencing used to identify and characterize circulating strains. The session also covers strategies for prevention and control, including modified-live and recombinant vaccines, population immunity, biosecurity, quarantine, disinfection, and molecular surveillance. Particular attention is given to the importance of vaccination in reducing transmission and limiting the spread of CDV between domestic and wildlife populations. This webinar is intended for veterinarians, veterinary technicians, veterinary nurses, researchers, and veterinary students interested in canine infectious diseases, diagnostic testing, vaccination, epidemiology, and disease prevention.
