Why did ancient Europeans become white?
10,000 years ago, some of the people living in Europe had dark skin and striking blue eyes. So how did their descendants eventually become much lighter-skinned?
In this video, we travel back thousands of years to uncover the story behind one of the most fascinating changes in human evolution. We explore Cheddar Man, melanin, UV radiation, folate, vitamin D, hunter-gatherer diets, the rise of farming, and the genetic changes that shaped European skin pigmentation.
You’ll discover why dark skin was crucial for our ancestors in high-UV environments, why living in northern Europe created a very different evolutionary problem, and how changes in diet and lifestyle may have altered the balance between sunlight, vitamin D, and pigmentation.
We’ll also look at why Cheddar Man could maintain dark skin despite living in prehistoric Britain, how hunter-gatherer diets supplied vitamin D, and what changed after agriculture spread across Europe.
And the story doesn’t end in Europe. We’ll compare European and East Asian pigmentation and explore convergent evolution — how different populations can develop different genetic solutions to similar environmental challenges.
Finally, we’ll take a step back and ask what skin color can actually tell us about human history, migration, adaptation, and our shared ancestry.
