https://www.pupia.tv - Regione Campania - VOn 25 September 2026, following the meeting of the Monitoring Committee for the Campania ERDF Operational Programme 2021–2027, a delegation comprising representatives from the European Commission’s DG REGIO and the Managing Authority of the Campania ERDF Regional Programme visited the archaeological site of Pompeii to inspect some of the works currently underway as part of the Strategic Programme for Environmental Regeneration and Flood Risk Mitigation in the Sarno River Basin. Specifically, they assessed the work currently underway on one of the Programme’s strategic projects: the refurbishment of the Conte di Sarno Canal. This artificial watercourse, branching off from the source of the River Sarno, was commissioned (1592–1605) by the Count of Sarno, Muzio Tuttavilla, to supply water to his mills in Torre Annunziata. Designed by the architect Domenico Fontana, it ran through the present-day municipalities of Palma Campania, Striano, Poggiomarino, Scafati, Boscoreale, Pompeii (including the archaeological site) and Torre Annunziata, covering a distance of approximately 21 km, before flowing into the Tyrrhenian Sea. In the first half of the 1980s, in view of the increased demand for drinking water, the Campania Aqueduct Authority began to gradually reduce the water supply at the canal’s inlet, eventually closing it completely in 1984. The drying up of the canal has exacerbated the environmental problems associated with it, which are also linked to illegal discharges. Through the implementation of two projects, the aim is to restore the canal’s functionality by separating rainwater from unauthorised discharges, reducing the risk of flooding and ensuring the safe conveyance of water flows from the Vesuvian basins to their final destination at sea.
