Salvation is Created (Spasenie Sodelal Esi) by Pavel Chesnokov is one of the most celebrated works of Russian Orthodox sacred choral music. Composed in 1912, it sets a single verse from Psalm 74 in Church Slavonic: “Salvation is wrought in the midst of the earth, O God. Alleluia.” Based on an ancient Kievan chant, Chesnokov transforms the simple melody into a profound and majestic a cappella setting, characterised by rich harmonies, resonant bass lines and a gradual unfolding of sound. The work embodies the solemnity, mystery and spiritual grandeur of the Orthodox tradition.
