What happened when winter came, the fire burned low, and there was no central heating, no insulation, and no easy way to stay warm?
In this episode of Past Was Hard, we go to medieval Dartmoor around the year 1300 to see how ordinary people at places like Hound Tor survived winter inside a longhouse. A single open hearth could not heat the whole building, so survival depended on an entire system: clothing, bedding, animals, food stores, fuel, preparation, and luck.
This is not the romantic version of medieval life. It is the practical reality of trying to stay alive through cold, darkness, dampness, weak harvests, and fragile household systems.
