Ruth could not see the harvest ahead or the generations her story would touch. She could see Naomi—and chose to stay. From the road to Bethlehem to daily work in the barley fields, this song explores faithful love expressed through ordinary kindness. Ruth’s place in the family line of David and Jesus gives us a wider view of a future she could not have known. Inspired by Ruth 1–4 and Matthew 1:1–16. A poetic retelling and prayer to love the person before us while trusting God with the outcome. Part of Those Before Us — songs of faith for real life. LYRICS Two roads lay open in the dust, And neither one was kind; One led toward the life I knew, One left that life behind. You kissed us both and turned away, Your sorrow in your hands; I watched you walk toward Bethlehem And knew where I would stand. I could not promise fields of grain Or shelter from the rain; But I could walk beside you And share what still remained. I did not know where love would lead, I knew whom I would not leave. Your road would be the road I walked, Your God the One I’d seek. I could not see the harvest Or the years beyond that day; I only saw you on the road And chose with you to stay. They welcomed you by your old name; You said that name was gone. I stood beside you at the gate And stayed when they moved on. I could not lift the grief you bore Or make the daylight sweet; So when the morning found us poor, I rose and went to glean. The barley brushed against my hands; The hours wore them thin. I gathered what the harvest spared And carried supper in. The words I spoke upon the road Took root beneath the sun; Love filled my hands with little things That needed to be done. I did not know where love would lead, I knew whom I would not leave. Your road would be the road I walked, Your God the One I’d seek. I could not see the harvest Or the years beyond that day; I only saw you on the road And chose with you to stay. Then Boaz welcomed me to rest And gave me bread to share; I came to gather fallen grain And found a place of care. I’d learned to give with open hands, To carry what I could; Now kindness reached those hands of mine— I learned to welcome good. She held her son, young Obed, And watched Naomi smile; The road that brought them home through grief Had stretched beyond those miles. From Obed, Jesse; then came David— A shepherd crowned as king; And down that line would come the Christ, With healing in His wings. She had not stayed to shape the ages, Or dreamed what God would weave; She saw one woman walking home And knew she would not leave. Lord, when You place someone beside me, Keep my eyes upon their face; Let me love without demanding That I know what love will change. If all I bring is bread for supper, Or an hour to sit and hear, Let their life be worth my giving, Even when no fruit appears. You can see beyond the furrows, Past the seed beneath the ground; Help me tend the life before me, Leave with You what may come round. I do not know where love will lead, But I know whom I can serve; Give me hands for daily kindness, Give me grace beyond my words. Whether I can see the harvest Or it grows beyond my days, Let me love the one before me And trust You with its ways. She could not see the journey’s end. She could see Naomi. So she stayed.
