40 km through the Arctic wilderness of Northern Norway.
In late spring, my friend Karan, my Alaskan Husky Güni and I set out from ONGA Lodge in Mathisdalen, following an old mining road all the way towards Kjækan in Kvænangen.
What was supposed to be a 4-day, 3-night adventure turned into a proper wilderness journey. We had plenty of rain, found a few old cabins along the way where we could dry out and spend the night, cooked some great meals, fished when we had the chance, and spent one night sleeping out in an open cabin with the wilderness all around us.
The biggest challenge came when we reached a river that turned out to be much harder to cross than expected. It took us several hours to find a safe way through.
This was actually my second time doing this route. I skied the same journey in winter with Anja, but experiencing the landscape in late spring was a completely different adventure.
No rush, no schedule — just 40 km, a dog, good company and a lot of time out in the wilderness.
Hope you enjoy the journey.
