April 1989. First Monday Trade Days in Canton, Texas. For five hours, an old hatmaker watched thousands of people walk past his folding table of handmade hats to buy eight-dollar factory ones two rows over. Then a skinny stranger in a faded denim jacket picked one up, sat down on an upturned peach crate, and asked him how they were made. The old man had no idea who he was talking to, not even when he pointed at a poster of Stevie Ray Vaughan across the aisle and said, "That hat on his head ain't right." The hat that came out of that conversation ended up on the cover of a Grammy-winning record. And one day, it came home. Disclaimer: This video is a dramatized retelling inspired by the lives and careers of Stevie Ray Vaughan, Big Jim Vaughan, Martha Vaughan, Jimmie Vaughan and Alex Hodges. Dialogue and certain events have been recreated for storytelling purposes.
