🇬🇧 On July 17, 2026, I set out from Helsinki for Spain’s Basque Country to begin my first true thru-hike: GR11. GR11, known in Spain as the Transpirinaica, runs from the Atlantic coast through the Pyrenees all the way to the Mediterranean. The distance from the starting point at Cabo Higuer to the finish at Cap de Creus is about 850 km, with nearly 50 km of total elevation gain and loss. In the first episode of the series, the trail takes me from the coastal town of Hondarribia through the pastures and villages of the Basque Country to the edge of the autonomous community of Aragon and the western peaks of the Pyrenees. The Basque hills provided a gentle start to the mountain trek in terms of elevation, but the hot and humid coastal climate brought its own challenges for a Finnish body, while I was also adjusting to Spanish culture and schedules.
