In 1888, an unidentified man was pulled from the water at Ashford Ford, Virginia.
Around his left wrist was a fresh strip of hickory bark.
Three short cuts.
One long diagonal mark.
The same symbol had been carved into a nearby tree.
Local people knew the sign.
They called it the work of the Dead Reckoners.
For years, the Burris family had searched for bodies lost in floods, quarry collapses, and mountain accidents. Their strange markings were once a practical system used to guide searchers toward the missing.
But when cemetery keeper Roswell Burris discovered fresh Dead Reckoner marks nine years after the family stopped using them, he began to investigate.
The trail led to wagon contractor Alonzo Pate, a missing quarryman, and an abandoned lime pit where the old recovery code had been turned into something far darker.
Pate’s crimes could be explained.
The final mark could not.
Days after his arrest, the same hickory sign appeared twenty-one miles away beside another unidentified body.
Someone else still knew the language of the Dead Reckoners.
This story is fictional and created for entertainment purposes. It is inspired by Appalachian folklore, historical recovery crews, unidentified burials, quarry accidents, rural search traditions, and forgotten local legends.
