Founded in 985, Montpellier is a historic city in southern France known for its medieval university (founded in the 13th century), its renowned medical center, and the medieval charm of the "Écusson" district. Originally a commercial hub, it became part of the Kingdom of Aragon in 1202, before passing to France in 1349. Today, it is a vibrant cultural and university center. In this third part we start from Boulevard Henri IV and we enter the Jardin des Plantes de Montpellier to reach Boulevard Pasteur and Square Theophraste Renaudot. The Montpellier Botanical Garden (in French, Jardin des Plantes de Montpellier) is a museum facility of the University of Montpellier that is home to over 2,000 plant species, cultivated across an area of 4.6 hectares.Founded in 1593, it is the oldest botanical garden in France, and a precursor to the Jardin des Plantes in Paris, established in 1626. After here we return through Porte de la Blanquerie to the oldest center of the city in Rue dell'Université and conclude in the direction of Place des Martyrs de la Resistance and the Prefecture of Hérault where we'll end the tour The Porte de la Blanquerie is a remnant of the former ramparts of Montpellier, in the Hérault department, located at the intersection of Rue de l'Université and Avenue Louis Blanc. It is also known as the Old Gate. The Place des Martyrs de la Résistance (Square of the members of the Resistance martyrs) is located in the historical centre of Montpellier. It bears its name in honour of the martyrs of members of the Resistance, because the préfecture office close by was a transit area for members of the Resistance during the 2nd world war. It is the perfect place to relax next to the Food market and to eat a snack under an olive tree. There is a big fountain, and a nice view of Rue Foch and the Trimphal Arch.
