What really happened to Japan's leaders after WW2? Hideki Tojo survived his own pistol shot, only to be tried at the Tokyo Trials and hanged three years later. The day after his execution, the man who slapped him in court walked free, and Tojo's own minister went on to become Prime Minister of Japan.
This is the story of the Sugamo lottery: which Japanese WW2 leaders paid for the war, who got away, and why it had very little to do with guilt.
