🎹 Bach – Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, BWV 147
Pianist: Yunchan Lim (임윤찬)
Piano transcription: [arranger, e.g. Myra Hess – please verify]
About the music
"Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" is the English title of the chorale movement that closes both parts of Bach's cantata "Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben", BWV 147 (Leipzig, 1723). Over a gently flowing triplet line, Bach lets the chorale melody "Jesu, meine Freude" unfold in calm, steady phrases. It became world famous in the 20th century through piano transcriptions and is still played everywhere today: in concert halls, at weddings, and at moments of reflection. In German it is known as "Jesus bleibet meine Freude", in Dutch as "Jezus blijft mijn vreugde".
About the pianist
South Korean pianist Yunchan Lim became the youngest gold medalist in the history of the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2022, at the age of 18. His performances are known for their singing tone, deep concentration and poetic simplicity, qualities that suit this Bach chorale perfectly.
