Cannards Grave Road bridge in Shepton Mallet is one of over 3100 structures within the Historical Railways Estate that we maintain on behalf of The Department for Transport (DfT). Working closely with DfT and Mendip Council, we’ve arranged a ‘permissive agreement’ beneath the former railway structure, making way for the creation of a new active travel connecting with Strawberry Line in Shepton Mallet, Somerset. Helene, our head of programme, chatted with Cllr Ros Wyke and Kelly Knight Sustainable Transport Officer for Mendip Council, finding out how the route will benefit the area and why the project needed a partnership approach to become a reality. We’re in discussion with Greenways & Cycleroutes, Strawberry Line and local councils on plans to repurpose other railway structures within the Historical Railways Estate as part of a long-term aspiration for the Somerset Circle.
