Wells' The First Men in the Moon tells the story of a scientific journey to the moon with a businessman's greed at its heart. The plot centers on two very different men: Mr. Bedford, a struggling London businessman looking to make his fortune, and Professor Cavor, an eccentric and brilliant scientist. Cavor has invented a substance called "Cavorite" that can negate gravity. Bedford, seeing the immense financial potential, convinces Cavor to build a spherical spacecraft to travel to the moon in search of valuable minerals. Upon their arrival, they discover a barren landscape that quickly transforms with the lunar sunrise, as the frozen atmosphere thaws and strange plant life grows at an astonishing rate. They soon encounter the Selenites, an insect-like, highly-specialized society living in a complex network of caverns beneath the lunar surface. Their differing motivations lead to conflict. Cavor is fascinated by the Selenite society, while Bedford's greed and violent tendencies lead to a confrontation with the alien inhabitants. In the ensuing chaos, Bedford manages to escape back to Earth in the Cavorite sphere, leaving Cavor behind. The story concludes with Cavor's transmissions being received on Earth, where he details the Selenites' society and his grim observations about humanity's warlike nature.
