Can two stars really tell us whether gravity behaves differently at extremely low accelerations?
Wide binary stars offer a surprisingly simple way to test that question. Separated by enormous distances but still gravitationally bound, their motion reaches the same weak-gravity regime where some of our biggest questions about galaxy rotation begin.
With Gaia now measuring these systems in unprecedented detail, the test should be straightforward.
But the results are proving anything but.
In this video, I take a closer look at what wide binaries are actually telling us about Newtonian gravity, MOND, and the assumptions that sit between measurement and conclusion.
